Is it too late to start preparing for the UMAT?

The short answer is no. Studying for the UMAT is possible and no matter how late you start, you will still be able to improve, just like with any other subject. The long answer is: it depends on how much time you put in and how effectively you do it. At this stage, it’s important to study SMART. Trying to do as many UMAT papers as you can will also take up a lot of your time. You are probably also going to be quite busy balancing year 12 or University study and work with UMAT preparation, so learning study...

AN EXPLANATION OF UMAT RESULTS: HOW ARE UMAT RESULTS CALCULATED? AND OTHER UMAT RESULTS FAQS.

HOW ARE UMAT RESULTS CALCULATED? Unfortunately ACER does not release the marking scheme that is used determine UMAT scores. There is some speculation as to the following: answering a question correctly that is not answered correctly by the majority of UMAT candidates will be weighted more heavily. And conversely, answering a question incorrectly that most UMAT candidates do answer correctly, will be weighted more heavily against a candidate’s UMAT score. However, because ACER does not release the marking scheme or question weightings for the UMAT it is impossible to be absolutely certain of this. What is certain though, is the...

Year 12 is a busy year – we all know that. However, it can get a whole lot busier if you’re studying for the UMAT as well. In terms of the online LMS, I started by reading the guides, and doing related drills intermittently;...

The UMAT – A Test of Endurance

The UMAT is so commonly viewed as a test of intelligence and aptitude, that we forget how crucial it is to improve our mental endurance for this exam. In fact, the endurance required for the UMAT is much greater than that required for any end of year school exam. Not only is the UMAT as long as or longer than any school exam (3 hours), but the nature of each individual question requires much greater focus. This need for enhanced application to each question is due to our inability to draw upon a year’s worth of content and knowledge, as...

TOP TIPS FOR NON-VERBAL REASONING

Students often find non-verbal reasoning questions the most difficult initially, especially if they have never encountered them before. Here are a few tips to help tackle these questions from an experienced UMAT tutor.  Tip 1: Keep it Simple. Non-verbal reasoning questions will require you to find the most simple and logical answer. It may feel like the questions are out to trick you, and that may lead to you trialling overly complex rules. However, in many situations, the simple pattern is the correct pattern. Having this in mind will help form your approach to the questions. For example, if you...

UMAT Countdown: Musings from an experienced tutor

This impending Wednesday is without a doubt one of the most terrifying – yet unusual days of the year. Throughout the past seven years, I have uttered the phrase “The UMAT is a game” innumerous times, and now, on the brink of becoming an actual doctor (finally!) and exiting the world of UMAT, I thought I’d pass on my suggestions for this game.    Suggestion 1: Your mood is your top priority. The UMAT is designed in such a way that your mood greatly impacts your performance. Why? Because it’s an exam of emotions, of empathy and of understanding. Feeling...

Is the UMAT even relevant to medicine?

Sometimes it can feel like the UMAT has got nothing to do with being a doctor. It can feel like just another one of the oddly-shaped hoops one must jump through in the medical entry process. However, this mindset that the UMAT is just a barrier to doctor-hood can be demotivating and counterproductive. In this post, I’ll give some real life examples of how each section of the UMAT relates to skills I’ve had to develop in medical school, and how UMAT preparation is related to, or perhaps even beneficial to, the study of medicine. Section 1: Logical Reasoning and...

Pathways into medicine: UMAT vs GAMSAT

Living in our corner of the world and having a desire to pursue medicine will mean that at some point you will encounter either the UMAT or the GAMSAT. I experienced the former a multitude of times and the latter most recently, and have achieved success in both. This blog will guide you through both exams and pathways.   If you are a student pursuing medicine in New Zealand, the UMAT will be your only concern. It is not possible to directly enter medicine as a high school leaver at either Auckland or Otago, so the UMAT is a barrier...

Building the right mind set for success on the day of the UMAT

From the moment you first hear stories of the UMAT and how difficult it can be until the first step you take to enter that exam centre, only you can decide the mind set and approach that will embody your UMAT experience. There are two ways to view this exam; either as a roadblock that is there to hinder you on the path to success or simply a stepping stone towards getting you into your dream career. In the end, which viewpoint you adopt is up to you.   A distinct point that is often conveyed when describing the UMAT...

What actually happens on the day of the UMAT?

If you’re a student who likes being prepared and in control, you’ve probably tried to imagine what the actual day of the UMAT will be like. You might be asking yourself some of the following questions – How early do I need to get there? What will the venue look like? Where can I leave my bags? It is best to be as prepared as possible, but spending too much time ruminating on the answers to these questions can detract from your preparation for the test itself. Therefore, this blog will attempt to answer some questions that you may have...
